Overview
The Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP representation of energy companies began in 1901 with the firm’s work for the first electric power company in Virginia. The firm now has lawyers located around the globe, with more than 400 lawyers dedicated full time to representing energy clients throughout the United States and in more than 50 other countries on six continents.
Our energy practice covers matters as diverse as convergence mergers between electric and gas utility holding companies, corporate restructurings, debt and equity finance, representation of energy marketing and trading companies, corporate and regulatory work associated with the formation and operation of independent energy market operators and regional transmission organizations, privatization of distribution, transmission and generating companies in Asia, Latin America, Europe and Africa and the development and financing of energy projects around the world.
Hunton Andrews Kurth’s energy practice coordinates the delivery of legal services in a multidisciplinary approach, involving experienced lawyers from all practices of the firm in order to provide clients with seamless advice and creative solutions to their business needs. Like the firm's energy team, our environmental, finance, litigation, regulatory and tax team partners consistently receive top-tier rankings by Chambers and other leading legal publications, resulting in the culmination of a one-stop team of talent advising clients on the full spectrum of energy-related matters, including:
- Project finance and development
- Project acquisitions and dispositions, and acquisition financings
- Environmental permitting
- Tax
- Litigation and arbitration
- Public Policy
- Regulatory matters
Our regulatory work remains a cornerstone of our energy practice. Hunton Andrews Kurth’s energy regulatory practice provides high quality legal services to national and international entities in the energy sector. We represent a broad range of clients, including investor-owned electric utilities, Independent System Operators and Regional Transmission Organizations (ISOs/RTOs), stand-alone transmission companies, electricity suppliers and lenders. Our attorneys are active before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (“FTC”) and, as appropriate, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (“NERC”) and the regional reliability entities. We are also involved in regulatory and legislative advocacy on energy policy.
A number of our lawyers have worked at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission or its predecessor agency. Others have extensive experience in dealing with major rulemakings and contested case proceedings before FERC, focusing in recent years upon advising clients and advocating client positions on gas and electric industry restructuring and development of competitive markets. Our lawyers were actively involved in the restructuring of the US interstate natural gas pipeline industry undertaken by the FERC, participating in rulemakings that established the framework for restructuring and individual dockets implementing the framework. We currently advise clients with respect to FERC regulatory policy on electric industry restructuring.
In addition, our firm’s antitrust and intellectual property, labor and employee benefits, real estate, bankruptcy and creditors’ rights and commercial arbitration experience play an important role in the firm's energy practice. Our practitioners in these practice areas have had extensive experience with the issues faced by investor-owned electric utilities, electric utility holding companies, and unregulated energy companies in the electric, gas and coal industries.
We believe our ability to provide to our energy company clients teams of lawyers located throughout the world with in-depth knowledge of every aspect of their business and operations together with focused experience in a breadth of specialized matters is unsurpassed by any other law firm.
