Lisa Sotto speaks to The Advocate about the May 2017 Equifax data breach, which was not made public until September 2017. Lisa explains the effects of large breaches on federal legislation. She says, “There have been many attempts to enact federal, preemptive data breach notification law. She continues, “[They] have consistently failed, year after year.” Lisa attributes this stall to the fact that “states are intent on retaining their authority in this area, and the variations in state law are important to state attorney generals in holding companies’ feet to the fire with respect to their state residents.”
